Toronto, Canada : Pursuing higher education abroad is a
transformative experience, and for Varun Teja Pothukunuri, an Indian student at
the International Business University (IBU) in Toronto, Canada, this journey
has been one of growth, learning, and opportunity. With six years of experience
in product management across SaaS, industrial automation, and digital
transformation, Varun is now leveraging his MBA studies to enhance his business
acumen in a multicultural environment.
In an exclusive
interview, Varun shared insights about his experience studying in Canada, the
opportunities it presents, and his advice for aspiring Indian students.
Why Canada?
"As a technocrat,
I recognized Canada as a global hub for business education. The country offers
excellent academic training with a practical approach, which aligns with my
career goals in SaaS and digital transformation," says Varun. "The
affordability of education here was another key factor. My MBA program costs
around CAD 25,000 annually, significantly lower than tuition fees in other
parts of the world. Plus, the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows me to
work in Canada for up to three years after graduation."
A Transformative
Learning Experience
Varun’s academic
journey has taken him from SRM University in India, where he completed his
B.Tech in Automobile Engineering, to Lawrence Technological University in the
United States for his M.S. in Automotive Engineering. However, he highlights
how his MBA at IBU is uniquely positioned at the intersection of technology and
business strategy.
"The program
emphasizes collaborative learning. Working with students from 15 different
countries has broadened my perspective on global business challenges.
Additionally, hands-on experience with IBU’s advanced analytics lab has
strengthened my financial planning and data-driven decision-making
skills."
Work Opportunities
and Career Growth
One of the major
advantages of studying in Canada is the ability to work while pursuing a
degree. "Students can work up to 20 hours per week off-campus during
academic semesters and full-time during breaks without a separate work
permit," explains Varun. "Universities also offer internships, which
help in gaining industry experience. Networking through career fairs, alumni
events, and industry panels can significantly increase employment
prospects."
Embracing Diversity
Toronto’s diverse
culture has enriched Varun’s experience. "Celebrating Diwali with my
international friends, sharing traditional Indian food, and experiencing
different cultures firsthand has been incredible. The multicultural exposure
helps students grow both professionally and personally."
Advice for Indian
Students Considering Canada
For Indian students
planning to pursue a Master’s degree in Canada, Varun shares some key
recommendations:
- Research your program thoroughly: Choose a university with strong industry
connections, such as IBU, which has partnerships with top tech firms.
- Apply for scholarships early: Programs like the Ontario Student
Assistance Program (OSAP) can provide financial support.
- Be prepared for the weather: Toronto winters can reach -40°C, so
investing in good winter gear is essential.
- Embrace networking and extracurricular
activities: Joining
student clubs and attending career fairs can open up new opportunities.
"Canada offers
immense possibilities if you are proactive. My journey has been life-changing,
and I encourage aspiring students to make the most of their experience,"
concludes Varun.
